Okunoin is located at the east side of the town. It is the largest cemetery in Japan, and regarded as the most sacred site in Koyasan.

It is the place where the spirit of Kobo Daishi still remains alive to this day. Kobo Daishi went into eternal meditation on March 21st in 835.
Since then he is believed to be in eternal meditation in his mausoleum.
The main entrance into this revered place is Ichi-no-hashi, which literally means the first bridge.

After crossing the first bridge, 2 kilometers' cobblestone walkway leads us to his mausoleum.
Along the serene path, there stand hundreds of towering cedar trees and over 200,000 gravestones and monuments or memorials to honor historic individuals throughout Japanese history.
