(1) Okunoin Tour

Tips: Okunoin is one of the two holy sites in Koyasan. It is a beautiful forest

of Japanese cedar trees. It all started in 835 when Kukai, the founder of

Koyasan entered the eternal meditation at the end of this forest. More and

more people wanted to build their memorials and graves close to him. Now, Okunoin is well-known as the Japan's largest cemetery with over 200,000 memorials and graves. Buddhist monks offer meals to him twice a day. You

will never miss the chance to see it. Your guide will explain well about this

sacred site as well as anecdotes.

(2) Garan-Kongobuji Tour

Meeting place: Visitor Information Center (VIC) by 12:50

Dismissing place: Kongobuji entrance at 14:30

Notice: Your guide will explain from outside of Kondo, Daito and Kongobuji.

Tips: Garan is one of the two holy sites in Koyasan. It is the original site

founded by Kukai, the founder of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism in the 9th

century. It is a temple complex with many historical buildings. Among them,

what makes this sacred place unique is the Shinto Shrines built by Kukai

himself. Since then, two different religions have long been enchrined

peacefully by Buddhist monks in Koyasan. The secret of their happy relation

is good to know.  Kongobuji is the Head Temple of Koyasan Shingon

Buddhism. It has nearly 4,000 sub-temples all over Japan and overseas. 

Kongobuji is the largest temple in Koyasan. It consists of many rooms

with beautiful paintings on the sliding doors, and a beautiful dry lansdscape

garden. It is the largest rock garden in Japan. Your guide explains you what

to see inside. Please enjoy inside by yourself as long as you like after

the tour.

 

(3) Garan-Kongobuji Tour
